Climb Fit St Leonards
Address: Unit 4/12 Frederick St, St Leonards, NSW 2065
Website: www.climbfit.com.au
Focus: Top Rope, Bouldering, Training
While St Leonards Climb Fit is one of Sydney's oldest climbing gyms, it is still favoured by many climbers because of the setting quality and wide array of training facilities for climbers of any level. Top rope is the focus at St Leonard's as the majority of the floorspace is occupied by climbing walls of varying size, texture and angle. Only a small portion of these walls are bolted for lead climbing, yet the routes are steep, techy and packed with variety.
The setting of the upstairs bouldering section focusses on steep, pumpy moves rather than the modern, gymnastics-inspired moves in modern bouldering gyms. This offers great training for outdoor bouldering routes. Training facilities also include a Moonboard training board, campus rungs and an air-conditioned, traditional gym for weights and cardio. St Leonards Climb Fit has something for everyone, regardless of preferred discipline, training goals or climbing level.
Pros
- Diverse wall shapes and great setting
- Air-conditioned, traditional gym facility for weights and cardio
- Offers classes in climbing, yoga and general fitness
- Offers private coaching and climbing clinics
Cons
- Limited lead climbing

- Roped walls are not as tall as some other gyms
The Ledge
Address: Western Ave, Camperdown NSW 2050
Website: https://susf.com.au/the-ledge-climbing-centre/
Focus: Top rope, Bouldering
The ledge is a bulwark of the university outdoor club scene. Despite being located on the USYD campus, the gym is open to the public and frequented by UNSW Outdoor Club each Thursday and UTS Outdoor Adventure Club every Monday as well as two different USYD based clubs. Many young uni students have founded their passion for climbing and outdoor sports at this gym. It is a great place to meet and get involved with members of the university outdoor clubs.
The Ledge features two, wide top rope walls and a small, upstairs bouldering section. One of the top rope walls has been textured and featured to feel more like rock. For many years, the gym has hosted the historic "Manky Cam" inter-uni climbing comp: the scene of many great climbing feats. While the walls lack some of the modern holds and lead climbing options seen in other gyms, the Ledge has all the soul of the old school climbing scene and a lower entry price than other gyms.
Pros:
- Located at the USYD campus (one bus from central), easily accessible by uni students and city goers.
- Friendly community atmosphere and a great place to get involved in uni outdoor clubs
- Tough, old-school route setting
- Lower entry cost than other gyms, especially for uni outdoor club members
Cons
- Shorter walls
- No lead climbing available
