Yes plastic has been recycled for years. But when you recycle plastic it always degrades some what. Hence the things that you produce with recycled plastic are usually more basic a product than the thing that was recycled. That's fine when it comes to most things like bottles or t-shirts, but you're not trusting your life tied into most things. Up until now, the process of recycling plastic hasn't been good or pure enough to be able to produce high-end safety equipment like climbing ropes simply because the plastic on it's second time round wasn't good enough for the task. So only raw and new plastic could be used to make the nylon. 

Edelrid dedicated years to perfecting their recycling process to produce nylon yarns pure and fine enough to safely braided into climbing ropes. And not just any climbing rope but an awesome climbing rope! As this process is still quite expensive Edelrid have designed the Neo 3R to be made from 50% recycled / 50% new materials.
