Nikwax Nubuck and Suede Proof is recommended by Gore-Tex, eVent and other waterproof membrane companies to help their lining perform their best. When the outer leather or fabric soaks up water, in drastically inhibits the breathability of the boot, compromising all the good work of the waterproof/breathable membrane. Keep your boots clean and keep the outers proofed for the best performance.
How To Apply Nikwax Nubuck and Suede Proofer
- Brush off dirt with a damp cloth and clean using Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.
- Shake well before use. Press sponge applicator to break seal.
- Apply generously to wet footwear; Spray-On (from a distance of 5cm) or Sponge-On.
- After 2 minutes, remove surplus with a cloth and allow to dry before use.
- Note: Light/coloured nubuck or suede may darken after treatment. Test on a hidden area first.
- Leave footwear to dry at room temperature.
- Paper can be stuffed into the toes to absorb excess moisture, this should be replaced when wet.
- Keep footwear away from fires and radiators, drying too quickly can crack leather and cause bonded soles to peel.

Why Breathability Depends on Water Repellency
Breathable waterproof footwear is most likely to get sweaty and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer nubuck or suede absorbs water, the breathability of the footwear will be reduced. Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) of your footwear must be maintained to ensure comfort. It will eventually wear off and need to be renewed with Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™.
When you’re active and wearing footwear, your socks draw moisture away from your feet, keeping them dry. However, if your footwear absorbs water and ‘wets out’ its breathability will be reduced. Moisture vapour will not be able to escape through the material, so your feet will feel clammy and wet. Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™ adds Durable Water Repellency (DWR), which prevents water absorption, whilst maintaining breathability, keeping your feet dry and comfortable.

Use Nikwax Nubuck and Suede Proofer When Your Footwear Soaks Up Water
Your footwear could be soaking up water just because it is dirty. First, try cleaning it with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™, and if it is fairly new, or recently re-waterproofed, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) will be revitalised just from cleaning. But, once the footwear has been thoroughly worn you will need to add DWR, using Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Proof™, after cleaning first with Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel™.
Alternative waterproofing products are often solvent-based aerosols; alternatively, they may be water-based and use fluorocarbons. Aerosol products are flammable. Fluorocarbons pose a potential risk to the environment and to the long-term health of the consumer. Solvent-based products also need to be applied to dry materials.
