Sometimes having a larger daypack is a good idea. This is particularly the case either in cold environments or when you're carrying extra gear other than just the essentials, such as photography or climbing gear. The other time it's useful is when you're on a longer backpacking trip. If you use a more generous daypack coupled with a wheeled duffel it makes a great system for day or short adventures.
